What is a Sweat Ceremony?

Sweat Lodge Purification Ceremony, the traditional way of cleansing body, mind, and spirit. By sweat and prayer, we clean our bodies of toxins, our minds of negativity's, and heighten our spirits -- come into a balanced relationship with ourselves, the Earth, and everything that surrounds us.

Perhaps another explanation for the Sweat Ceremony’s spirituality is its association with re-birth. The rejuvenating effects of the sweat, combined with its physical characteristics, make it a natural place for purification and rebirth rituals. The warm, dark, moist ambiance inside a sweat bath is easily likened to a womb, even the womb of Mother Earth herself.

What are the medical benefits of a Sweat?

Throughout history physicians have extolled the medicinal value of the sweat bath in its various forms such as the Finnish sauna, Russian banai, Islamic hammam, or the American Indian sweat lodge. Today, enthusiasts claim that beyond being relaxing the sweat gives relief from the common cold, arthritis, headaches, hangovers and "just about anything that ails you." Medical evidence shows that bathing in temperatures of 9O degrees C (192 degrees F) has a profoundly beneficial effect on a healthy body. Sweat also draws out lactic acid which causes stiff muscles and contributes to general fatigue. Sweat flushes out toxic metals such as copper, lead, zinc and mercury which the body absorbs in polluted environments. Elderly people and persons with heart problems should consult with their doctor prior to the sweat.

What do I wear inside of the Sweat?

Obviously, it is hot inside of the tent, please no jewelry, piercing's, contact lenses or make up. We are not responsible for any lost belongings. What you wear inside is entirely up to you. Monty (our guide) suggests going sky clad (naked) as the lodge represents the womb. For those of you who feel more comfortable wearing clothes, please wear a bathing suit, shorts or a towel. There is an area for you to change your clothes.

What should I bring with me?

First and foremost, an open mind! Remember this ceremony is entirely done outside, so bring comfortable clothes to change into, bug spray, a towel or blanket to sit on and a flashlight to make your way to the porta potty. We will have light snacks and water available. Please feel free to bring a healthy snack to share with the group if you wish. There are picnic tables available.

What should I expect when I get there?

Monty welcomes everyone. Those who have experience with sweats and beginners. He asks that everyone be respectful of each others journey as we all have our own personal beliefs. This is an evening of comradely and awakening. Monty will lead the group in the fire making process, informal discussion on what a sweat ceremony is, non-denominational prayer and be your guide once inside.

We will also be having a drum circle while waiting for the rocks to heat. We have a limited amount of drums and rattles. If you have a drum please bring it with you, if you have extras to share with the group, that would be great!

There will also be a guided meditation, mini reiki sessions for those interested and plenty of time to talk, relax and just enjoy nature. It is recommended to email Carole in advance if you are interested in receiving a Reiki treatment. Handmade incense, herbal charm bags and other items are available for purchase.

Will Sweats be held during the winter months?
